Kettering Health Uses Artificial Intelligence to Prevent Blindness
The first primary care network in the Dayton area to offer in-office screenings for diabetes is Kettering Health. The leading cause of blindness in the working age population is a disease that damages the blood vessels in the back of the eye. Patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes have too much blood sugar.
Until now, an annual screening with an eye doctor was the only way to see signs of diabetes.
To increase access to this important screening and decrease the number of patients experiencing vision loss, Kettering Health primary care providers in 10 locations can conduct the screening in their offices Artificial intelligence can determine if a patient needs to be referred to an eye doctor.
The use of this technology was championed by Dr. Dennis Anthony, an internal medicine physician at the Kettering Physician Network.

It is important to detect and treat diabetes before it causes blindness. It has been difficult to get patients to schedule and keep another appointment with an eyecare provider for their annual screening exam. We are able to close the care gap with the use of screening technology. He said that this testing reassured those patients that were negative and educated those that were positive for retinopathy to get proper care before their vision became compromised.
